My favorite venue was the Warfield. I caught the
three benefit shows there in '83. The Warfield holds
about 2200 people. It was during Easter break of my
2nd year of college. Of course I got a Looks Like
Rain story too. Rutgers 5/15/81. Got there 2:00 in the
afternoon and didn't get tix till 7:45, the rain started
shortly after we got tickets. Any how the place
has a small sunroof and it was raining all show. Occasionally
lightening was lighting up the building. During Looks Like Rain
Bobby kept looking toward the sky but no Lightening or Lazy
Lightening, which we expected for the occasion. Bobby still
didn't give up on timing the lightening though. During Estimated
he had this funny look when he sang Might and glory gonna
be name, Gonna fill the sky with flame,
but the lightening
still didn't oblige. During Jerry's solo just before where
the song breaks out into over drive the whole place lit up.
It was so cool that it happened for Jerry effortless, Bobby
was going for it all night. Everyone went so nuts the twirlers
in the outside hallways all came in to see what was up but they
were of course to late, left scratching their heads.
The closest I came to any mid west shows were an Indianapolis
and a Chicago show also in '82. At the Indianapolis show in '84
Before CC Ryder Bobby whispered in everyone ear and they played it
with a weird Truckin like riff. In the middle of the song Bobby
gave the signal and they went into double time the way Mitch Ryder
played it. I beleive this was the only time they played it that way.
My friend Joel is probably still wanted in Indianapolis for not
paying an open bottle ticket.
