Well put, but I don't think it's going to happen. First of all, a factual quibble, IMO, Panetta was not abandoning a sinking ship. He left it at the top of its game after the 1996 elections. I don't think he had an inkling of the scandal to follow; he was probably trying to test the waters for a run at the governorship of California. As for impeachment, I think politics is like the stock market; the scandal of the Starr report is already factored in. The Clintons have already warned of their shortfall. The worst is already past--unless of course Starr has some absolutely explosive revelation that no one could have possibly conceived. Therefore, Clinton has to simply beat expectations this Fall, and he's back on track. There will be no impeachment hearings. There will be no resignation. The GOP is the one that is going to be running the spanking line next Spring when they're still dithering over the impeachment report and the public rancor is against them for dragging this thing out. Censure Clinton, and let's be done with it. Doughboy.
