NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- PaineWebber Inc.'s new computer analyst, Don Young, started coverage of 16 high-technology companies Thursday.
Young, formerly of Prudential Securities, was the top-ranked computer hardware analyst in The Wall Street Journal's All Star analyst poll this year. He replaced Walter Winnitzki, who left PaineWebber earlier this year, a spokeswoman for PaineWebber (PWJ) said,
Young started 10 companies with "buy" ratings: Micron Electronics
Inc. (MUEI) International Business Machines Corp. (IBM), Hewlett Packard Co. (HWP), Sun Microsystems Inc. (SUNW), Data General Corp. (DGN), Network Appliance Inc. (NTAP), Unisys Corp. (UIS), Mercury Computer Systems Inc. (MRCY), Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ) and Storage Technology Corp. (STK).
He started two companies at "attractive": Dell Computer Corp. (DELL) and EMC Corp. (EMC). And he began coverage of four others at "neutral": Gateway Inc. (GTW), Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI), Stratus Computer Inc. (SRA) and Apple Computer Inc. (AAPL).
