MINING

US, Canadian Firms to Investigate Golden Eagle's Gold Claims - Bolivia September 4, 1998

Representatives of at least five US and Canadian companies meet with Bolivian government officials today as part of an investigation into US-based Golden Eagle's claims of a six-million- ounce gold discovery at its Cangalli property in Yungas region, north of capital La Paz.

Deputy mining minister Rene Renjel said the purpose of the meeting was "to evaluate Golden Eagle's announcements and provide investment guarantees if the gold reserves were proven". Scottish geologist Charles Bruce has coordinated the delegation's visit.

Golden Eagle president Terry Turner, who has lived in Bolivia for 15 years, said the meeting was gratifying because of the expectations created by Cangalli. But he urged all parties to remain calm until presentation of final reports verifying the reserves. Renjel said the reports would end all comment and speculation.

Many gold industry players have cast doubt on Golden Eagle's claims of a major discovery at Cangalli. The company's project has suffered credibility problems and its share trading has been suspended. The gold industry has been cautious of new discoveries since the scandal over Bre-X's exaggerated Indonesian find last year.
