Investors following IBIS Technology may want to review the following articles if they have not done so already.
-EXCERPT- IBM will combine copper interconnects with SOI transistors in a range of MPUs next year, and expects performance gains of 20 to 30 percent from the shift to SOI. By applying copper, SOI and low-k interlevel-metal dielectrics to the gigahertz processor design unveiled last February at the International Solid State Circuits Conference, IBM expects to be able to push commercial processor speeds to the gigahertz range in two to three years-faster than competitors such as Intel Corp. eetimes.com
-EXCERPT 2- While SOI is not a new technology - IBM has worked on it for over 15 years -- PC chip maker Intel and its rivals have not placed as much emphasis on developing the technology. "If you look at the research papers put out by Intel, they are not putting as much of a priority on SOI and copper as IBM is," said MDR's Diefendorff. "But eventually they are going to have to do this."
While a licensing agreement is not totally out of the question, Intel rivals Advanced Micro Devices and National Semiconductor's Cyrix - both which have foundry agreements with IBM - may be able to produce such chips sooner.
Already, AMD has signed on with Motorola to produce chips based on copper technology similar to IBM's. zdnet.co.uk
-EXCERPT 3- Sharp uses SOI wafers supplied by wafer manufacturers. "We have been testing various type of wafers," said Shimizu. "Thus far, we believe that the Simox SOI wafer has the highest potential." Simox stands for "separation by implantation of oxygen." Sharp's SOI devices are fabricated on Simox wafers with a 1,000-Angstrom (50-nm) top silicon layer. edtn.com
Does anyone know if IBIS is a subsidiary of IBM & Motorola's AIM Alliance?
