Brazil will defend real - Cardoso spokesman Reuters, Friday, September 04, 1998 at 17:40 BRASILIA, Sept 4 (Reuters) - Brazilian President Fernando Henrique Cardoso will take any measures necessary to defend the national currency, the real, but he is not considering an emergency fiscal package nor a devaluation, a spokesman said Friday. "If necessary, the Central Bank will take any measures needed in favor of the real, regardless of the elections," the spokesman said.
