Regarding your earlier post - this development is targeted more at high end machines. Your comments about video are correct for desktops but not for high end servers. There, the ability of the PCI bus (or multiple busses) to pass information among many high speed peripherals (like fibre channel storage or VI clustering interconnects) far exceeds the ability of PCI to carry the weight. A single ServerNet port can saturate a 66/64 PCI for example.

These three companies have more than 60% of the high end intel-based server market between them. They can certainly make this the de facto standard for high end large servers, where it will deliver a 50% to 80% improvement in data intensive areas like database and transaction performance. Dell and others trying to enter that space will have to pay the toll to stay in that game.

This is clearly a play to increase cost of entry into the high end market. I would expect this to be only one of many barriers thrown in the way of the Dell train as it attempts to head for enterprise junction...
