Steven, Borges sounds very interesting, but I suspect I would have a hard time understanding what he is saying. I was behind the door when my classmates learned the European classics, for some reason. Well, not really behind the door, but slumped in the back row reading F. Scott Fitzgerald, not listening, feeling nihilistic. I have never been able to figure out why I was not interested, particularly in Greek and Roman mythology. Unfortunately, as I'm sure you know, it is impossible to really understand classical literature without a good understanding of mythology, and a basic literary understanding of the Bible.
Who are the other South American "magic realists"? I assume you are not referring to Carlos Castaneda? He was definitely magical, at least!
I will look for something he wrote, however, since stories are much easier to attempt to decipher than longer works. I thought we were talking about heretics, though, when you first mentioned him. Does he treat this subject in a factual, or a fictional, way? |
