The statement regarding Mongolia is indeed accurate. We didn't say that it is free of problems. Mongolia is a young democracy, and we should expect that in the best of times it will make mistakes. These are not the best of times.
However, I still believe that the people of Mongolia do firmly want the reforms that are in place, and accept that the transition will entail some pain. The people are well educated, and have rapidly moved the country forward. The free-floating Mongolian currency, the tugric has outperformed the rouble, yen, Canadian and Australian dollars.
The resources of Mongolia are exceptional. The geology supports world-class coal, copper, lead, zinc, fluorspar, silver, and gold deposits. There are significant deposits of many other minerals, including oil, and most certainly gas. It will take substantial investment, far more than could be raised domestically.
The first decade of the 21st century could see incredible advances in Mongolia, as it moves to be a supplier of diverse products to both the Asian and Russian markets.
