The following was published in the Aberdeen Press & Journal, Saturday 5th September, 1998.

"SHELL COY OVER FALKLAND GAS FIND".

Exclusive by Jeremy Cresswell.

Shell has made a gas discovery in the Falkland Islands and is planning to drill a second well later this year.
The Press & Journal has learned that the find was apparently large enough to have been potentially commercial in the North Sea, but not in the Falklands which is deemed too remote for conventional gas field developments.
Oil is the primary target of the South Atlantic quest.
It is understood that the rig Borgny Dolphin encountered a large number of hydrocarbon shows as it drilled the third ever well offshore the Falklands.
The original target depth for the Sebald 1-A well was 4,500 metres, though it is understood this was extended to 5,000 metres following a pause at 3,500 metres to "log" the well.
The P&J disclosed on August 8 that the rig Borgny Dolphin had encountered hydrocarbons and the rig had apparently been reported to be flaring.
While the veracity of the original flaring report has not so far been confirmed, more than one source has said quantities of gas were encountered at different depths.
But yesterday, Shell continued to play its cards close to the chest. In a brief statement the company and its partners in the project said they would drill a second well starting during the fourth quarter of this year. This appears to be in addition to the five-well programme originally planned between the various consortia now engaged on the Falklands oil and gas hunt.
