Zeev Hed:

Your knowledge and understanding of the spirit of Judaism is quite good. Although I was born in the U.S., I received my elementary school education in Israel. I was taught religious tolerance in Israel. By Religious Tolerance, I don't mean a putting up with or grudging acceptance of someone else's religious belief that runs counter to your own. Religious Tolerance is rooted in the limits of human knowledge: we really don't know which religion is right, and therefore we should respect them all and judge our own beliefs rather than attacking others.
As a secular humanistic Jew, I raise a few questions:

1) Was it immoral for God to ask Adam not to eat from the " tree of knowledge? " Is not knowledge good? Was not Adam's defiance of God an appropriate Jewish response? He loved learning.
2) Testing one's love of God by asking a father to sacrifice his son. Sacrifice? From an ethical point of view, it is murder. From a religious point of view, it is sacrifice. As a father, I would never do it. Would You?
3) The concept of Satan in the book of Job is a very deep complex topic that most people do not understand. My reading is that Satan is the Angel and Guardian of the Earth. Satan represents love of life, the pursuit of happiness on this earth as a worthy and attainable goal. Passion and making money honestly are good things. To not be happy is a sin. One thing is for sure here: Satan is not evil in Judaism. God has dialogue with and is influenced by Satan. Every Human must never be treated merely as a means but as an End also. Do You also Love Satan as part of your love for the Earth?

P.S. I would also like Israel to become more secular. It was not that way when I was there from 1959-1965.
