Michelle:

Regarding Arkansas being 49th in education, well thats pretty dismal, but for a number of reasons not unexpected, however Ca in the lowest 10% IS ABSOLUTELY AWFUL, (and Ca USED to have good schools so this is how far Ca has fallen).

One of the reasons California's ranking has fallen is the continued application and promotion of "bilingual education," designed to teach immigrant children (legal and otherwise) in Spanish. The trouble arises because SATs are administered in ENGLISH (still the official language of the United States) and the kids can't understand the questions.

Not surprisingly, the principal advocates of bilingual education are the teacher's unions, owners of Spanish-language-only media outlets, and Democrats. By refusing to let children learn to speak English through immersion, these groups are locking them into lives of manual labor and minimum wages. And guess where the Democrats' biggest power base is?

The Democrats are sacrificing the future of children just so they can remain in power.

Meanwhile, children of Asian families go to English-only classes (there is no bilingual education in Vietnamese, Laotian, Greek, Mandarin, Korean, or Cantonese) and consistently rank highest on the SATs.

I agree with you; it's ABSOLUTELY AWFUL. And the Democrats and teacher's unions are responsible for it.
