Michael,
I like your idea of planting trees, but as the population grows, there are more and more places that are paved over and less and less places left to grow trees. It does sound plausible that urban sprawl could be a contributor to surface temperature increase. Would you propose to limit urban sprawl, and if so, how? I think if driving was more expensive, there would be less urban sprawl.

Most people running industries care just as much about the environment as the Greepeace zealots.

I don't agree with that statement. I don't think most industries are currently run in a sustainable manner. Waste products are produced without regard for what happens to them. Raw materials are used without regard for their sustainability. The fishing industry is currently having trouble due to overfishing in some places. There are no safeguards in place to prevent industries from overusing resources. Even the medical industry, which is supposed to be looking after our health, has no problem producing radioactive waste which has some very negative long term health consequences when it is not disposed of properly. And it's not clear to me if there is a proper way to dispose of radioactive waste on a long term basis. Until there are more industries run in a long term sustainable manner I will not believe that the leaders of industries truly care about the environment.
