Avid, Tektronix To Form Broadcast-Based Joint Venture
By Adam Wisniewski

Tewksbury, MA and Beaverton, OR--Avid Technology and Tektronix are forming a co-owned joint venture to combine Avid's newsroom-based nonlinear editing products with Tektronix's networking and live production offerings, beginning with the integration of Avid's NewsCutter NLE and Tektronix's Profile video server. The two companies are planning a joint demonstration at IBC in Amsterdam this month.

"The customer gets the benefit of our respective strengths; Avid in digital content creation tools and Tektronix in storage, routing, and networking solutions for broadcast," said Avid Chair and CEO, Bill Miller.

"The alliance between Tektronix and Avid will put the premier pieces of the digital broadcasting puzzle together," added Tim Thorsteinson, president of Tektronix's Video and Networking Division.

With the incorporation of Avid's NLE, Tektronix's own nonlinear system, Lightworks, will cease production. "We're going to stop developing nonlinear editors for Lightworks once we roll out Version 3," explained Thorsteinson. "We haven't sold into the film-editing business successfully for the past couple of years. We will, however, continue to meet warranty committments for the installed customer base."

As part of the agreement, starting October 1, Tektronix will become the exclusive distributor of Avid's broadcast products in the U.S. and Canada.
