Steven:
My company is starting to look into the NC type of device. We figure that 80% of our employees could use the NC to get their jobs done. I've seen support costs that average $8,000-$12,000 for each PC on each employees desk per year.... upgrades, help-desk, virus protection, backup software, disk-crashes... and the list goes on.
80% of computer owners are not heavy computer users, because the PC is expensive and complicated. Give them a TV like device to view the Web, access corporate data, run a session of MS word and save the document in a datacenter, using the NC/TV. I can certainly justify our employees getting an NC, Video Phone setup.
I've also seen Dataquest estimating that 1.3million ADSL lines will be installed by 1999. Belgacom , Sun Microsystems Inc , Oracle Corp are in a pact to develop this NC device at the home.
" Belgian partially-privatized telephone operator Belgacom SA said on Friday it signed an agreement with Sun Microsystems Inc and Oracle Corp to develop the network computer idea in Belgium".

The only thing stopping the NC/TV device in the home is high speed access, xDSL/Cable modems. I hope the PC days with the hard-disk and CD-ROMS are almost over... until later....
