In the end, it boils down to who you love more, God or the Human. I don't profess to be religious, in the traditional sense of the term. I don't even know if I'm right. I may be wrong. But I have chosen to love the Human more than God. I can even accept the Ontological Argument for the existence of God, which states that God exists from my Idea of Perfection ( in spite of Luther telling me I can not form such an Idea ). I am not smart enough to prove or disprove the existence of God. I do, however, love the personality and character of the Human more than God.
After my Bar Mitvah, when I was about 14, I decided to take my love, respect and fear of God and give it all to Humanity. After a period of despair, I became happy in the world of self-reliance. Sometimes I think the World would be a better place to live in if people respected the Human more than God. But I'm compassionate and I understand the religious instinct and state of mind. I lack the Wisdom to judge others here.
I dare say that from a humanistic Jewish point of view one need only love learning and do good deeds to be considered a good person. Religion ultimately boils down to how you treat other humans. Treating a person as a means to an end ( for the sake of profit or passion ) is very inhumane.
