[milestones/ Wakamatsu]

Hi SoMo,

in regards to milestones: earlier this year tamir mentioned something like six or seven... three i have heard named: the new adsl chip (most significant, as discussed) due q 1 99; a new adsl card which should be out now, with two modems per card (7-8% savings in gross margins) ; and a new box for cpe equipment (cost reduction of $100 per link)

have been wondering about this last item (cpe box) for some time... my first thought was that somehow the definition of cpe was being expanded (more than a little), and the reference was to an onu... but that seems like a real stretch and besides, premature. my next thought was that the modem itself was being referred to... but believe this will be handled by others as yet unnamed and the phrasing seems odd.. now i am thinking that the box referred to is the siecor/orctf network interface device (NID) product with pots splitter line module, announced this june

---

recently ran across a product preview on the adsl chip dated May of this year on a fujitsu website, the device is called the MB866xx, and it looks good (very integrated and low power) and will be programmable for g.lite. Note that as expected the analog front end will be integrated into the chip:

expect that the "linedriver" is also integrated, but cannot tell from the diagram , would be interested should you be able to find out...

---
also it looks like volume/cost effective chip fabrication should not be an issue ... as the fujitsu network products division website notes that:

"...(their) Devices are manufactured in Japan, using Fujitsu's world class fabrication capabilities..."
fujitsu-ede.com

---
and a quick tour of fujitsu's japanese semiconductor manufacturing facilities shows that the most likely candidate might be:

"Aizuwakamatsu Plant (Wakamatsu)

Products: Logic ICs, ASICs
Established: 1984
No. of Employees: 1,500"
fujitsu.co.jp

---

you may well be right that not much news will be forthcoming from the tel aviv tech conference, but on the other hand things seem to be heating up.. and if dt is out by then, orctf might be comfortable with at least dropping some hints..

also should dt come orctf's way, this might be a tangential indication that the adsl silicon is on track, as would think dt might have wanted reassurance that new silicon would be available roughly in the timeframe discussed..

any and all info from the conference on milestones or other stuff would be much appreciated when you have the time

thanks
