fwiw: recently found these old posts from the pair thread this last february , thought some here might find them interesting .. courtesy of Elroy Jetson and Henk Kruisbrink.. (tried to point out that indeed it was probably the fujitsu chip) ... hope their concern is justified, even tho the timeframe seems to have slipped :) :

After checking into Pairgain as an investment, I find there's a great concern inside the company with a new DSL technology from some company in Japan. The concern revolves around this product having a much lower cost and possibly higher capacity.
Does anyone know who this Japanese competitor is and what technology they're talking about?
The chart for PAIR looks like its about to blast off, but I need to nail down this concern with their future. ----

Thanks for the reply. After asking friends who might have had contact with Pairgain, I found one who has very recent contact. He told me they were VERY anxious about the impact of "a competing Japanese product that will be introduced in the next few months", primarily because it was going to "provide a significantly lower cost basis for customers".
I'm sure it's good for Pairgain management to be anxious about things like this, but I wonder as a potential shareholder whether I should feel that same anxiety.
I like the chart. Super upside break-out formation (my description). But if I can't figure out what they're so concerned about I'm going to have to pass for a few months or more until the news comes out.
If anyone else can make some calls and get more details, I'm sure it would benefit everyone on this Topic.

Thanks for the links you posted. It appears that the Fujitsu/Orckit product may well be the Japanese product Pairgain is concerned with.
Pairgain is "sweating bullets" over the lower cost structure of this Japanese product. If the Fujitsu/Orckit product offers significant cost advantages, then this is probably the product they're concerned about. If it doesn't, there must be another product out there.
