Joseph,

First, CISCO was an up a comer in 94 and now is a bellweather like GE.
Second, You should look into the Cisco product line. Cisco is NOT a box maker like DELL...competitors can not just come in a replace a Cisco network like you can shift to a new type of desktop machine. Networks are complex ecosystems and having a common infrastructure usually will result in superior performance. Add to Cisco leading software IOS (here comes stockweenie) and few competitors can compare to the complete offering that Cisco provides. You should research this a bit more.
Third, Survival of enterprise companies relies heavily on building more effecient operations. Their networks are their life blood. They're more likely to reduce workforce first. AND, for Service Providers, competition is fierce and network build-out and innovation IS their business. Not adding new technology or new capacity is, in effect, giving up the fight.
