I think the fact that the universe at its extremities is slowing in its expansion is evidence that gravity has a finite effect at all distance. Perhaps even instantaneous. This Einstein denied. But all force at distance has no electro magnetic emanation required to effect it. It is merely force. The slowing of expansion means a stop is inevitable, otherwise expansion would have reached a steady state. If it had then gravity would be a constant at all distances. It isn't, then the Universe cannot he steady state. If gravity were weakening It would have to reach a point of a zero at an infinite state of expansion. But it will always be finite. And no slowing of expansion would be observed. Something that is slowing must stop. If a stop will happen then at this end gravity will be at its weakest but still finite otherwise it could not induce a stop. As contraction begins it will get faster and faster as gravity increases. It will continue until the universe is a singularity again perhaps the size of a small star and since the vector is all inward no light at first will escape. The universe will then with all space removed fit in a hat box. After a time or in an event as all time will have stopped the universe will expand again. It may need prodding. Bored gods would be good for that. Time as Einstein defined it is the necessary fourth dimension used by Newton but in E's world gives the Universe its shape. The conundrum is that space itself shrinks with the universe. There are no other universes as there is no inside or outside to this universe. As it shrinks it takes the "all" with it. As a matter of fact size and exterior-interior is a time related dimension. The only thing to the relative size element that tells us there is an expansion is there is time. Without it there is no dimension. This says that if the universe should stop and lose all energy time stops and so does dimension. In effect the universe would cease to exist and existence would cease to be. It would wink out like a light. In fact winking and outness would cease in the same instance as they would have no meaning. If indeed all matter is in fact frozen energy this makes sense as when it ends there is no dimension time or existence. Where once there was something there not then even the absence of anything. Because absence is a thing. Without absence there is not necessity to imagine envelopment of it. This brings us to the possibility or probability that the universe is only there because we imagine it is. Without our perception of it, it is pointless anyway.

Remember light gets everywhere it is going instantaneously relative to itself. It never ages. So to light the universe has no size. So it never sees time. Why do observers see time? What they see is time-distance. It really only exists as an event marker. There is an event with 3 dimensions that exist because time or changing events are happening. As the universe contracts time will slow to a crawl as events become heavier. When it is one small ball events will be stopped or very very slow. If time should stop due to intense gravity then the universe would cease to have dimension and simply disappear.
So either way we are screwed.
