Nihil, interesting post. Re: "Don't think anyone else in the business is in a position to help (except IBM, but they may have to rescue Motorola)."
Motorola, at a $29 BILLION sales run rate may have to be rescued? Biggest high tech bailout in history? Answering my own question, yes, it would be the biggest bailout ever. IBM has more savvy than that, though.
Re: "Compaq would be a candidate, but timing is wrong. Already has indecgestion."
Amen. Tandem was plenty, but Tandem plus DEC was insane. Maybe Eckhard Pfeiffer needs some of that Lithium Carbonate you mention.
Re: "If things get a little worse at AMD (which I don't really expect although it may have trouble with its debt indentures if it reports a big loss for Q3) then Intel could make a friendly offer to rescue them"
Why bother? To get the DOJ and FTC off their back? There is no love lost between Intel and AMD. Intel would probably look the other way if AMD was losing it big time. Put it another way: 'Not my job, man.' I wouldn't play God, or doctor, if I were Intel. If the tables were turned, would AMD bail out Intel? Fat chance.
