AG's job is to fight inflation. The risk of deflation is too great at this point for them to even consider hiking rates. If we were to slide into recession, that would spell disaster for Asia, since they would now have no domestic or foreign buyers for their goods. The fact that there may be inflation created by the so-called wealth effect is really the only thing AG should be focused on relative to market levels. However, we are in a situation where the Asian debacle precludes this from occurring, no matter how high the market level. There is simply too much capacity from asia and hence no way prices can rise substantially.
