Hi Steve: I agree with you that ATM would indeed be the "best" solution.
You stated...
"The next logical step for DTV is over IP/ATM. Why should I have seperate protocols, equipment and transmission lines for these..."

Do you think AT&T and TCI see it this way? IF so who would make the ATM switches and other equipment for their digital network back bone?

I understand that 3COM submitted a proposal to AT&T over a year ago for a digital (ATM) IP network design but was turned down as (1) too expensive and (2) too sophisticated ..... perhaps with the TCI deal this proposal may be revisited. (note: I heard this at the San Jose ATM trade show this year and confirmed by an engineer who worked on the proposal).

I also heard that CSCO was selected as the primary vendor of equipment for the build out of the SPRINT digital network. Therefore, I would think AT&T would utilize a different vendor and design.

From your understanding of 3COM technology, does 3COM have the leading edge ATM technology that an AT&T/TCI would buy into for their integrated digital network? Do their products provide for an "open system" design built around the latest ATM standards?
