Alan, A Christian has been brought by the blood of Jesus and as such has cut the ties of heritage, clan, social status, and everything else that people of the world cling so tenaciously too. Jesus said that if my kingdom were of this world then would my servants fight. To be an ambassador of Christ is a high calling and demands we refuse all other suitors. eg, heritage, race, culture.
