Wireless Solution KANATA, ONTARIO--Local Multipoint Distribution Service (LMDS)
Enables Simultaneous High-Speed Delivery of LAN, Internet, Voice
and Two-Way Video Services
Newbridge Networks today announced that Korea Telecom, the
country's national telecommunications carrier and eighth largest
service provider in the world, has selected the Newbridge(r)
integrated broadband wireless communication solution for its first
deployment of Local Multipoint Distribution Service (LMDS) in Korea.
The decision comes on the heels of two multi-hundred million
dollar broadband wireless contracts awarded to Newbridge by
MaxLink Communications Inc. and WIC Connexus, holders of Local
Multipoint Communication Systems (LMCS) licenses in Canada. LMCS
and LMDS refer to high frequency broadband wireless systems
operating in the 28GHz band, that deliver data, Internet, voice,
video, and multimedia services to business and residential customers.
Using point-to-multipoint millimeter wave technology, LMDS
provides a cost-effective, high-capacity "last mile" access
solution that effectively extends the reach of Korea Telecom's
fiber infrastructure to simultaneously deliver high-speed,
state-of-the-art services.
This will provide more customers with access to data, Internet,
voice, two-way video and other multimedia applications. Korea
Telecom is the first established service provider in the world to
deploy this technology.
"With the advanced functionality of the Siemens / Newbridge
MainStreetXpress(tm) 36170 Multiservices Switch, which delivers
asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) and integral wireless
technologies as part of a broad array of multi-service and
multi-access offerings, we can offer our customers high-quality,
state-of-the-art services at the best possible prices," said Dr.
Hanwook Jung, Wireless Multimedia Team, Korea Telecom. "Our
ongoing relationship with the Newbridge team will provide us with
the expertise we need to implement this important project and
adapt our network to meet our customers' changing needs well into the future."
The comprehensive Newbridge(r) broadband wireless solution
consists of a multi-service network that includes both base
station and customer premises equipment. The base station consists
of the Newbridge MainStreetXpress 36170 Multiservices Switch and
point-to-multipoint transmitters and receivers. The customer
premises equipment includes tranceivers and network interface
units (NIUs), which provide connectivity to in-building wiring for
T1, Ethernet and video applications. The industry-leading
MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager will handle Korea Telecom's
network management requirements. The system also provides billing,
statistics and maintenance support.
By incorporating ATM into the broadband wireless environment, the
Newbridge solution provides Korea Telecom with flexibility in
high-bandwidth, two-way services, with guaranteed quality of
service for the establishment of deterministic service level
agreements. Another key network feature is that available spectrum
is optimally used through dynamic bandwidth allocation, providing
statistical gain in the network.
"This project reinforces our position as a total solutions
provider in the broadband wireless market, and represents a
milestone in which ATM functionality is fully integrated into the
wireless environment," commented Ken Park, Managing Director,
Newbridge Networks, Korea. "This is another significant
achievement, following closely on the Company's success with the
KT (Korea Telecom) Fiber City project last year, which was the
largest commercial deployment of switched virtual circuits (SVCs)
in the world and the first commercial delivery of a broad range of
advanced high speed services."
As the deployment progresses, Korea Telecom will leverage this new
broadband wireless multi-service, multi-access ATM network for
multimedia applications that include videoconferencing,
telemedicine and distance learning.
