The thing about these kind of shenanigans such as the ATT and Lucent market freezing/deal-breaking collusion is that when it does not work it backfires terribly. What happens is that companies that believe it and hold off find themselves with a higher cost structure that makes it possible for lean new competitors to eat their lunch.

ATT could really get burned on this one.

And personally, knowing a good deal about the realities of backstreet corporate politics, this ATT phone call stinks to the moon. My guess is that some bright boys (or girls) in marketing decided to clobber this deal. Maybe there was top level collusion also.

I think though that the reality is that it provides a wonderful window of opportunity for all of ATT's competitors to get Ciena equipment and rip into ATT further. Serves them right.
