ECD currently holds about 12 patents on a optical recording technology called phase change. CD-RW, DVD-RAM, and DVD+RW all use phase change technology. ECD recieves royalties from licensees on the disks, 1% of the wholesale price. ECD currently has about 12 licensees. The first commercially successful product has been CD-RW, and the major manufactures have not been licensed yet. The company feels confident that it's patents will prevail and result in new licenses. This year about 7 million CD-RW drives will be sold and about 21 million disks. Next year it is expected to grow to about 15 million drives and about 45 million disks. DVD-RAM has just entered the market place.
