Hi Gale,

There are many cliches along with 'cutting your losses and letting your winners ride". My favorite is 'you can never loose money taking profits'. Most people tend to have more patience with loosers than with winners, correcting that is just something that comes with experience.
If you have a system that is either mental or mechanical, you will know when it's not working. When your in doubt, get out. Another lesson I am learning is to know exactly what your targets are BEFORE you buy a stock. Buy when it hits 18, sell if it has one close below the 20 day moving average, for instance. And stick to it.
The above is easier said then done but we are human and make mistakes and if you make enough of them, you'll slowly gravitate to the right thing.
