Compaq releases new Deskpros

Compaq has rolled out upgrades to its
Deskpro line of corporate computers that
incorporate the latest Pentium II and Celeron
processors from Intel.

The refreshed lineup from Compaq follows a
broad release of desktops that occurred two
weeks ago when Intel first released the
450-MHz Pentium II
and 300-MHz and
333-MHz integrated
Celeron processors.
Unlike the first
Celeron processors,
which met with a
lukewarm response among computer
vendors and customers, a number of vendors
are placing greater emphasis on machines
based on the new versions because Intel has
cured many of the performance problems.

The new Celeron chips are also driving down
prices. The integrated Celeron chips sell for
$60 to $100 less than roughly equivalent
Pentium II processors, which is prompting
lower desktop costs.

In addition, Intel is expected to cut desktop
processor prices substantially on September
13 and October 25, which will lead to
desktop cuts. By then, a 350-MHz Pentium II
will be the processor for the $1,200 to
$1,500 computer while the Celeron boxes
will be in the sub-$1,000 range.

The Deskpro EP and
EN series are now
both available with
the 450-MHz Pentium
II and 300-MHz and
333-MHz versions of
the Celeron
processor that come
with 128K of
performance enhancing cache memory. The
EP series is Compaq's performance series
for corporate users while the EN series is
geared more toward budget buyers.

A Deskpro EP with a 300-MHz Celeron
starts at $1,249 while models with the
450-MHz start at $2,229.
