Bosco,

Thanks. I agree that a comparison between HK and Malaysia is difficult and must address both degree and types of control as well as motive. IMO HK must have had some idea of the censure they would receive from their actions and decided that the urgency warranted the actions anyway. I am not at all convinced they were/are wrong.

Malaysia, on the other hand, may be something a bit different. I believe there is a political agenda overriding the sense of urgency here. It is resulting in hasty, hip shooting decisions in my estimation. That Anwar's dismissal and hastily choreographed political banishment was so closely associated with the policy changes suggest this to me as well. Other indicators include Mahatir's carefully chosen words concerning preservation of political stability, a rash of Internal Security Act arrests lately, and Mahatir's vehement and evocative anti-western statements designed to play to the fear factor.

Other movement away from free markets by different countries will reflect different agendas as well I assume and will be reflected by the variations of interdiction as well as the variety of results seen. This suggests that no one cure (as in IMF) will be suitable IMO.

Best,
Stitch
