With AM-Disheartened Voters Some key findings of the Battleground 1998 poll released Tuesday and conducted by Democratic pollster Celinda Lake and Republican pollster Ed Goeas. The poll of 1,000 likely voters taken Aug. 24-26 has a margin error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

-What one issue is the most important for representatives in Washington to deal with?

Restoring moral values - 22 percent. Improving education - 19 percent. Reducing taxes and federal spending - 13 percent. Fighting crime and drugs - 12 percent. Strengthening Social Security - 9 percent. Improving health care - 8 percent. Protecting the environment - 4 percent. Combination/unsure - 13 percent.

-Do you approve or disapprove of the way Bill Clinton is handling his job as president?

Approve strongly - 36 percent. Approve somewhat - 20 percent. Disapprove strongly - 34 percent. Disapprove somewhat - 7 percent. Unsure - 3 percent.

-What is your impression of Bill Clinton as a person? Do you approve or disapprove of him?

Approve strongly - 14 percent. Approve somewhat - 12 percent. Disapprove strongly - 48 percent. Disapprove somewhat - 14 percent. Unsure - 12 percent.

-If the election for Congress were being held today, and you had to make a choice, would you be voting for the Republican candidate or the Democratic candidate?

Republican/leaning Republican - 43 percent. Democrat/leaning Democrat - 40 percent. Undecided - 17 percent.
