How about the 1.5" microdrive?

Measuring 42.8-by-36.4-by-5 millimeters should qualify it for some slightly larger name size since there is 25 mm in an inch.

Unmentioned by IBM is power usage for parking the drive (platter)and unparking, and intolerance for magnetic fields and temperature as well as what ruggedize really means. With only 1 of IBM's plants in Thailand as sole source who else is going to undertake building more plants so that IBM's pricing stays competitive. New storage mediums mean a lot of capital investment and the co's. IBM is trying to induce to try the microdrive have to see clear overwhelming advantages for them to switch away from flash memory. In early pre-release commentary IBM is stressing all the positives. Those evaluating the technology will hopefully tell us what is also wrong with the product.

A much better technology than IBM's was one shown at a Norris shareholder meeting called ThinStor. It had no moving parts and used only a flow of electrons which could produce torque and scan a glass surface which became a storage medium. I believe this co. may have been part of Ministor.

Looking at NCI's recently announced patent reveals it's almost exclusively a hardware patent. I'm expecting their next patent release to likely be more of an update and enhancement to their OS. This may be a soon to be released event. The patents should give all future customers of Intel and Norris a sense of security that their products are protected.

It would seem likely that Intel will want to show the product NCI is designing for them no later than the CES (Consumer Electronic Show)in early January. Doubt it will be ready for Comdex in 6 weeks. Lanier is going to show the NCI product at the HIMA show in New Orleans on Oct. 5, 1998.

Best to all:
