Well, they use shareholder money to pay the employees, too. I
would recommend against stopping that. It is standard practice
for companies to have a couple of offsite parties a year -- the
idea, I suppose, is that it builds team spirit and improves
communication. I have worked in small companies, and I think that
it works there. I have also worked in large ones, and I found it
less useful to have parties with the entire company. When a company
is the size of Oracle, it isn't just not useful, it's almost
impossible to get everyone together.

What I heard is that Oracle is stopping only the single giant
Christmas party, not that they are stopping Christmas parties.
If you think that this is a serious waste of money (I don't have
an opinion about it), you should bring it up at the next stockholder's
meeting. However, I don't know of a company in the valley that
doesn't have some sort of "winter" party around Christmas (although
they don't all call them Christmas parties to avoid offending people
that aren't Christians, I guess).
