hi SoMo,
yes, yesterday's trading action was something of a nonevent (but all in all, think the news itself was pretty good none-the-less)
seems like most of the movement in price happened before the official news..., tho am cautiously optimistic that there might be a little more to go as the info is digested/noticed (like gte).. also maybe a little more stuff from h&q?
march 99 for adsl silicon sounds good... was this shipping in volume or just sampling?
til later s
fujitsu got around to releasing their spin this am... it is specifically mentioned that dt is planning a nationwide adsl network:
---- Japanese Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 1998-0188
Fujitsu-Orckit Alliance Is Selected by Deutsche Telekom as ADSL System Supplier --will play key role in Germany's first nationwide ADSL network--
Tokyo, September 9, 1998 -- Fujitsu Limited announced today that its Frankfurt-based subsidiary, Fujitsu Telecom Deutschland GmbH (FTD), in alliance with Orckit Communications Ltd. of Tel Aviv, Israel, has been selected by Deutsche Telekom to supply an advanced ADSL system as part of a nationwide ADSL network being constructed by the German carrier. FTD and Orckit will deliver 35,000ADSL modem lines throughout Germany by the end of 1999, with initial deployment to take place in eight major cities (Hamburg, Berlin, Duesseldorf, Cologne, Bonn, Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Munich).
The ADSL system transmits data at a speed of up to 8 megabits per second downstream (from network to customer) and at up to 768 kilobits per second in the opposite direction over existing copper telephone lines. At the same time, customers can continue to use their analog telephone or ISDN connections in addition to the ADSL service, since the other services operate parallel to ADSL on a single line.
Thanks to the new ADSL technology, advanced business applications such as corporate network LAN-to-LAN connectivity, high-speed Internet access and video conferencing are brought within easy reach. And for individual users, the high-speed transmission system will help deliver a wide array of multimedia services, including high-performance entertainment featuring video clips, games and 3-D animation, as well as transaction-supported services like teleshopping and home banking.
Recognizing deregulatory measures introduced at the beginning of this year as a remarkable opportunity to expand its telecommunications business in Europe, Fujitsu established Fujitsu Telecom Deutschland in a suburb of Frankfurt in January 1998 to carry out sales, maintenance and technical support for network operators. The Deutsche Telekom project is FTD's largest contract win to date.
Besides the just announced Deutsche Telekom project, Fujitsu and Orckit have previously concluded a contract with GTE in the US to provide a large-scale ADSL system including approximately 300 central offices in 16 states...
