Orion Gold Zone: Step Out Hole Hits Visible Gold

Pierre Masse, Vice President Finance of Major General Resources Ltd., announces that visible gold was recently intersected in a step-out hole on the high grade Discovery Vein. Drill hole BB-96-67 intersected the vein a further 80 metres (260 feet) down plunge from previously
reported hole BB-96-66 (November 29, 1996). 15 grains of gold were counted in the core which returned a preliminary assay of 46.96 g/T Au over 0.35 metres (1.37 oz/t Au over 1.14 feet). Although narrow, the interval carries a diluted grade of 13.71 g/T Au over a mining width of 1.2 metres (0.40 oz/T Au over 4 feet).

The vein intercept in hole BB-96-66 was check assayed by metallic method which upgraded the zone by 24 percent. The final assay runs 48.8 g/T Au (1.42 oz//t Au) over 0.5 metre compared to the preliminary value of 39.46 g/T Au (1.15 oz/t Au) by the non-metallic method. The hold zone in hole BB-96-67 is currently being checked for metallics and will be reported on in the New Year.

This recent drill intersection has shown the continuation of the Discovery Vein for over 160 metres (525 feet) below the constricting flexure which leaves the zone open to depth and along strike.

Visible gold was also encountered in an upper zone of altered mixed mafic/felsic volcanics which returned 9.22 g/T Au over 0.30 metres (0.26 oz/t Au over 0.98 feet). This was part of a broad zone of low grade gold mineralization that carried a weighted average of 1.08 g/T Au over 11.05 metres (0.031 oz/t Au over 36.25 feet). This interval appears to be a new, upper gold zone situated in a geological position where gold has not been previously encountered.

The results of drill hole BB-96-67 are summarized as follows:
Hole From (m) - To (m) Interval (m) Au (g/t)
BB-96-67 352.50 363.55 11.05 1.08
includes 363.25 363.55 0.30 9.22 visible gold
403.10 404.30 1.20 13.71
includes 403.60 403.95 0.35 46.96 visible gold

The Orion drill program has been completed for the year and compilation of data will be conducted prior to the next phase of exploration drilling in early 1997.
