Joe,
When AMAT layed off 2000 + the approx 1500 package departures
earlier in the year, it made a statement about business conditions
going forward. A large % of AMAT's business is derived from
ASIA and new fab expansion, of which there is none, at this time.
That should provide a major clue as to the state of business/growth
projections going forward. Manpower cuts of experienced workers are
not something a company does lightly if it sees the prospects of
business increasing within 6-12 months.
