Dear Brian:

I will read the article, but in all honesty, I
am skeptical of the economic viability of the
proposed BLAST scheme if it requires multiple
receiving antennas (excessive CPE cost).

However, smart antennas are really one of the big
upcoming technological innovations, primarily
for mobile wireless. Keep an eye on Arraycomm--
its CTO, Dr. Richard Roy, was one of my classmates
at Stanford. He is one of the most charismatic persons
I know. The company is not public yet, but is growing
very rapidly.

Another of my colleagues here just started a smart
antenna company which allows a much increased frequency
reuse factor for GSM.

However, as a rule of thumb, only the base station can
afford a smart (multiple antenna elements, advanced
signal processing hardware and software) antenna.

So as far as I am concerned, WCII will be safe with its
P-MP system. I have however, tremendous respect for
Bell Labs communications engineers capabilities, and
two of the engineers mentioned (Richard Gitlin, and
Gerard Foschini) are actually very well known and
have written key papers (Gitlin on fractionally spaced
equalizers, and Foschini on blind equalizers). So,it
is really exciting they are working on fixed broadband
wireless problems.

Best regards,

Bernard Levy

PS: It is nice to hear from you again.
