>>A related question - why don't people discuss political issues in terms of Republican and Democrat, rather than conservative and liberal?

In a greater sense than ever they have become proxies for each, respectively.

Liberals controlled both parties up until the 1960's. McGovern's loss and Reagan's victories accelerated the ideological sifting. Clinton has had a similar effect, as hundreds of moderate and conservative Dems officials have fled his increasingly liberal/left party. The "New Dem" thing was a PR sham. Clinton only did welfare reform and the balanced budget because the Rep majority and electorate forced him to against his and his party's wishes.

Pollster's predict that the Dem party will become further isolated on the left as it will be the conservative and moderate Dems in the House that will be defeated in November since they are the ones in the competitive districts. The hard lefties will survive and further drive their party leeward.

Actually it makes great sense to have a real right/left ideological divide. That gives the people an actual choice rather than just a choice of competing but virtually identical "brands".
