SUN CUSTOMERS TO EXPERIENCE THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS:
WORKSTATION PERFORMANCE AND
PC COMPATIBILITY

New SunPCi Card Will Enable Technical Computing Users to
Run Popular PCi-Based Applications Natively on Sun
Workstations

NEW YORK - September 9, 1998 - Sun Microsystems, Inc. is
expanding its family of PC interoperability solutions which enables
its UNIX. technology-based technical computing customers to
collaborate more effectively with their PC-based co-workers and
even run Microsoft Windows applications natively. The company
today previewed the SunPCiTM card, which will enable users to run
Microsoft Windows and DOS applications natively on their SunTM
UltraTM workstations. The easy-to-install PCI co-processor card
will provide Sun customers with the ability to operate in both
worlds, by allowing them to work with popular PC office
productivity applications without sacrificing the ability to run the
demanding technical applications they need in the more robust
SolarisTM operating environment.

The SunPCi co-processor card is the latest addition to Sun's
family of PC interoperability solutions which enables Sun
workstation customers to work in the same e-mail, spreadsheet
and other office productivity applications as their colleagues in
different departments. The SunPCi card will give users of Sun's
newer PCI-based workstations the same ability to run Windows
and DOS applications natively that users of Sun's S-Bus
workstations currently have with the SunPCTM co-processor card,
with even greater performance. The SunPCi card integrates the
Solaris and PC environments in a single, powerful desktop system
and provides much higher performance than either the S-Bus
SunPC card or software alternatives.

"No engineering department should be an island within an
organization, so Sun continues to offer a variety of PC
interoperability solutions to meet the varying needs of its technical
computing customers," said Ken Okin, vice president and general
manager of the Workstation Products Group at Sun Microsystems,
Inc. "Our new SunPCi card will allow our customers to enjoy the
best of both worlds - running both mission-critical technical
applications and office productivity applications at high levels of
performance on a single desktop system."

Dedicated Co-Processor and Memory Provide Higher
Performance

The SunPCi card will feature a dedicated 300 MHz AMD K6-2
processor and 64 MB to 256 MB of PC memory to deliver the
higher levels of performance needed to handle large documents,
graphics and calculations in the PC environment. Sun provides
sophisticated software to allow the system to transparently share
monitor, drives, keyboard and mouse resources between the PC
and Solaris environments. This combination delivers higher
productivity and cost savings in addition to freeing up valuable desk
space for users. The SunPCi card will support Microsoft Windows
and DOS applications, whether purchased off-the-shelf or
developed in-house.

Interoperability Solutions for a Full Range of Customer
Needs

The SunPCi card will offer the best performance and greatest
functionality of the products in Sun's full family of PC
interoperability solutions, which satisfy a full range of customers'
cost and performance needs:

PC file viewer - the PC file viewer included with the Solaris
operating environment allows customers to view and copy
text from PC files.

Netscape plug-ins - free Netscape plug-ins let customers
view a wide variety of media types, including audio, video,
graphics and documents such as Adobe Acrobat PDF files.

SunForumTM - Sun's recently announced software product
enables the sharing of applications as well as shared
whiteboarding, file transfer and other collaboration
capabilities with PC-based colleagues.

StarOffice and Applix - These desktop productivity
applications allow users to create, edit and print word
processing, spreadsheet, graphics and HTML documents as
well as read and write PC file formats on the Solaris
desktop.

RealPC and SoftWindows 95 - These emulation programs
provide full compatibility with PC applications for users who
do not require the native performance offered in the SunPCi
card.

Pricing, Availability and Support

Sun will provide pricing and availability details for the SunPCi card
later this year. The card will be available worldwide through Sun's
direct sales force, including Sun telesales, and its indirect
channels, including Sun authorized resellers and systems
integrators. Sun provides comprehensive services through
hardware and software support, flexible training, and expert
integration, consulting and management services designed to
meet customer needs. Worldwide availability of services will vary
by country.
