TELSTAR TO HOUSE CYBERSTAR
Loral Space and Communications Ltd. (NYSE:LOR) has introduced CyberStar, a provider of Global Broadband Services (GBS). CyberStar uses existing satellites for high-speed transmission, applications and custom aggregation of data, audio and video content, which can be integrated into any existing network architecture.
CyberStar provides a wide variety of applications and content, using satellites to deliver information at up to 27Mbps to multiple locations simultaneously. CyberStar uses a conditional access system to prevent unauthorized reception of the service. The system encrypts the signal at transmission so that only a user with an authorized smart card installed into a matched satellite receiver card can receive the protected data.
Initially, CyberStar service will be available using existing Telstar Ku-band satellites. Later, CyberStar will launch its own Ka-band satellites. CyberStar's network architecture is designed to complement existing communications networks, whether satellite-based or terrestrial.
"For example, CyberStar content could be re-distributed by a cable, LMDS or MMDS operator as part of a high-speed data offering," said Ronald C. Maehl, president of CyberStar.
Late in 1997, CyberStar announced that Adaptec will manufacture satellite-to-PC adapter cards which will provide the connection between PCs or servers and small-dish satellite antennas.
CyberStar has also partnered with NDS for conditional access, including both smart card and encryption technologies. Other business relationships include: Hewlett-Packard Company, which has entered into a strategic marketing and sales alliance with CyberStar; Netherlands-based Irdeto, for subscriber management; ONE TOUCH Systems, Inc., a leading provider of interactive broadcast training solutions, to market distance learning applications that will be bundled with CyberStar's service; and Al Nawasi, a Kuwaiti computer hardware and software company, to deliver broadband services via satellite to businesses in the Middle East.
