Steve, This defies all logic and is a precarious position to be in. Let me explain: You concede that the "inconsistencies" exist but essentially "look at the brighter picture" by saying that "the salvation message through all versions of the bible is the same." So if I find 10 books that disagree on small parts, I'm supposed to ignore them and hope the "bigger picture" isn't false? The entire principal of Salvation comes under strong review when the book that teaches the idea has problems in itself. This is not localized to the Bible but to all books. If I find a book that is historically inaccurate on many points, I won't believe it on the bigger ones. If a man gives you the wrong change for a dollar, don't give him your life savings. If you wish to accept the "small errors" and hope that the major beliefs are free from errors, that's fine. But it puts you in a position where you cannot say without a doubt that the important thing you believe is free from error. Proof is the essential element missing from your equation.
