Buying a put is considered opening a "short position" NOTE the difference McMoron, its not "shorting the stock".
Selling a put is considered closing a "short position"

TAKING A SHORT POSITION MEANS BETTING THAT THE STOCK WILL GO DOWN.

Be careful before you lose your shirt in the "investing business", since you dont understand it.
