He plays a team sport where individual feats are rarely celebrated and he perhaps was unsure of exactly how to handle a personal accomplishment

I agree with you saying sex rarely has any celebration. It usually comes in the form of "Thanks!", or "You were wonderful!". Although, some people do like to call their friends immediately after sex and tell them of their recent accomplishment. And you know what? Usually the go on the other end of the phone says, "You prick!". What kind of congratulations is that?
