Nortel (Northern Telecom) Helps Third Party Vendors, Wireless Operators Quickly Deliver, Deploy Access, Network and Back Office Solutions
DALLAS, Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Speed to market remains a key to success for many wireless operators. Equally important is the ability for operators to feel at ease when deploying third party solutions.
Nortel (Northern Telecom) (NYSE: NT - news; Toronto: NTL - news), through its Open Solutions Program, offers one of the widest range of third party testing options available today including the ability to test network solutions, terminal, and back office equipment. Most labs only provide the ability to test network solutions.
Nortel has worked closely with a wide variety of third party vendors to make the rollout of all key features associated with a wireless system as transparent as possible to the operator. Work in the Open Solutions lab focuses on providing operators with an extensive range of system components that complement TDMA and CDMA networks.
A diverse group of more than a dozen third party vendors has worked with Nortel to help provide operators with the high level of confidence desired when bringing up a network or making upgrades to a system.
Nortel's Open Solutions Lab serves several purposes. It allows third party vendors to test three key components: network solutions including traditional services such as voice mail and enhanced Wireless Intelligent Network services such as prepaid billing; IS-95 CDMA and IS-136 TDMA access or handset devices; and back office equipment such as billing and customer care systems.
A sampling of network, access, and back office third party solutions that Open Solutions has approved or is integrating includes:
Network Solutions
Location Services: SignalSoft Corp. is providing emergency applications that are E911 phase I compliant. Short Message Services: Both Comverse and Sema have successfully tested their short message service applications in the Open Solutions Laboratory. Voice Mail: Glenayre has integrated the voice messaging component of its Enhanced Services Platform with the DMS-MTX switching system. Comverse is collaborating with Nortel to integrate its voice mail system with Nortel's switch. Prepaid Billing: NBTel Interactive is integrating a prepaid service solution that enables Nortel customers to expand their customer base to subscribers who are unable to obtain credit. Number Portability: Bellcore is integrating its number portability service with the DMS-MTX switching system. Over-the-Air Service Provisioning: ADC Newnet, Inc. and Sema are integrating OTASP services that allow centralized credit approval and mobile phone activation within minutes of a subscriber's purchase of a mobile phone.
Access Solutions
IS-95 Terminals: Handsets from Qualcomm Inc. [Nasdaq:QCOM - news], Samsung and Sony are among the CDMA terminals that have been tested in the Open Solutions Lab. IS-136 Terminals: Motorola, Nokia and Philips have tested their TDMA handsets with the DMS-MTX wireless system.
Back Office Solutions
-- Billing/Customer Care: Sema's CABS 2000 customer care and billing solution is being integrated with the DMS-MTX switch and MTX data server.
Wireless operators can choose already tested services or conduct similar tests with third party solutions that best meet the needs of their subscribers.
The Open Solutions program allows Nortel to provide valuable consulting services to vendors on vital specifications for both standard and proprietary interfaces and then test the products with the DMS-MTX to ensure compatibility. In the past, adding unproven third party solutions to a network could result in failures to the operator's system.
Nortel's commitment to an open architecture for off-board applications gives third party vendors the opportunity to test their products on Nortel's DMS-MTX switch prior to integrating these solutions into an operator's network. This approach further supports Nortel's commitment to providing end-to-end solutions for its customers.
