Wow, Alan!!
Good to hear. I had the exact opposite experience yesterday. I had just upgraded from Win 95 to Win 98, called Dell to ask what type video board I needed to install a second monitor, they said to buy an PCI type, which I did at CompUSA. I got the Diamond Viper V330, which is the only one I could find, the rest were all AGP types.
When I installed it, the second monitor came on, but my original monitor stayed all black. I tried everything I could think of, called Dell and they blew me off because I didn't buy the new video board from them. I had tried to earlier, but they didn't seem interested in recommending anything to me, told me to just buy something locally.
Dell told me to call Diamond, which I did, twice. They quickly blew me off as well. Today, I called Dell back for help, they offered to sell me a board, but said they had no support for it if I needed help. In fact, I talked to three tech guys from Dell and two of them said I couldn't use one AGP board and one PCI, both should be PCI (I only have one PCI slot available). One even suggested I use the USB port. I got lots of advice, but no help.
The original AGP board in my Dell is the STB Velocity 128 (4MB) AGP type. I was thinking of calling around and trying to buy another like it in the PCI style. The only slot I have available in the PC is one PCI slot.
Are you telling me the PCI slot becomes the primary monitor and the AGP slot becomes the secondary monitor in Windows 98? I suppose I could connect my existing 21-inch monitor to the new PCI card, and then connect my additional monitor (17-inch NEC) to the original AGP slot. I obviously want the 21 inch to be my primary monitor with the display functions.
So, looks like you're way ahead of me. Good for you! You mentioned something about ATI. What is that? The manufacturer of your original AGP type board? I'm not familiar with it. By the way, where did you buy your STB board and what was the cost and delivery time on it? I think I should buy one, too, especially since I already have one STB board installed.
Perhaps all I need to do is get the updated Windows 98 drivers for my original STB board. What do you suggest I do? By the way, when I was looking in Control Panel under Display and Device Manager, I couldn't see how to set or configure each monitor separately. Should I be able to do that? How much memory do you have in your video card, and how much do you suggest? I have 4 MB on both my cards. Is more better?
What do you suggest I do? Thanks for any help or advice. And, I hope you enjoy your new toy tomorrow and make enough to pay for it many times over.
