Ron:

About 5 years ago as part of a masters program I spent a month in Tokyo and did a paper on the Banking systems (I had much assistance from a bank analyst from Barings, who as I look back was so right on). It is an amazing shell game, passing the real estate holdings to a minority owned Cooperative credit association, a structure set up by the MOF.

The credit associations refused to sell the RE at less than 85% of Book and take the hit. But the loans were off the Banks balance sheet.

It is a shell game that is continuing today, and it seems Japan thinks if they stall long enough real estate prices will recover (or other asset values will strenthen such as cross equity holdings).

There are those who have been shorting Japanese long bonds for years thinking they cannot get any lower.

Surprise Surprise.

Now as the yen weakens what do you think the effects will be on:

1) US Markets (combined with the Starr report)

2) the Yuan and HK $.
