Funny you would remember the '69 Series against the A's, since the Mets played the Orioles that year.

McGwire's achievement is astounding when one considers these facts.

1. The Cardinals single season home run record before this year was 43 by Johnny Mize in 1940.

2. Until this year no Cardinal had hit 40 home runs in a season since 1940.

3. The most homers hit by a Cardinal until this season since Maris set the record in 1961 was 35 by Jack Clark in 1987.

4. The Cardinal record before this season for most combined home runs by two players in a single season was 61 set by Rogers Hornsby and Jim Bottomley back in the '20s. McGwire has broken that record by himself and the record currently stands at 89 (Ray Lankford has 27 this year to go along with McGwire's 62.

I have always thought Maris' record would fall, but never in my wildest dreams did I think a Cardinals player would be the one to do it. Way to go, Mark.
