MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 10, 1998--Today's
optical disk drives are used for a diverse mixture of applications, and the list is growing.

Here are other highlights from the 1998 DISK/TREND Report on
optical disk drives:

-- Rapid growth is now underway for writable versions of CD/DVD

format drives, with an assist from falling retail price levels

for CD-RW rewritable drives, now declining through the $400 price

level. For years, the writable CD format was dominated by

write-once CD-R drives, widely used in business and professional

applications requiring quantities of CD-ROM disks too small to

justify the cost of the mastering process for mass duplication.

However, the combination of CD-RW's media flexibility and falling

prices have made it possible for CD-RW to take over the current

writable CD drive market, with over 90% of 1998's 4.8 million

drive shipments. Multiple contenders for the DVD rewritable drive

standard have confused the current market, but the report

projects the start of rapid growth for rewritable DVD drives

starting in 2000, with shipments rising to rival those of CD-RW

drives.
