Primitive man and societies were very irrational and the concepts of dieties were created in pre-history and refined in early history. Mostly it was to explain the then unknowable, such as the causes of the winds, eartquakes, seasons, stars, sun, moon, elements, etc.
So-called modern man is not that far from the primitive. Most still accept or create dieties to fill in the gaps of man's current state of knowledge. These gaps will be filled eventually and reason and knowledge will replace mysticism. What a happy day that will be!
