Sorry Gary, you are incorrect. If I say that something will grow by 10% I mean that it will be 10% higher in the future than it is now. The denominator is the base period.

I have no idea where you got your information on the calculation of growth rates, But lets take an example using your proposed calculation. Suppose you have an asset that has increased in value from $100 to $500. According to your method, growth would be 80%. According to the rest of the world it would be 400%. Your method would cap greatest possible growth at 100%.

Now lets look at negative growth. Suppose the asset had decreased in value from $400 to $100. You would be showing growth of -333%. The proper number, of course is -75%.

Bottom line: Dell does it correctly.
